Flu is a serious illness which can be life threatening in people with long term medical conditions, those aged 65 years and over and pregnant women. Seasonal flu vaccine starts to work within two weeks to help protect you from catching the flu. Reactions are generally mild and serious side effects are very rare. The seasonal flu vaccine cannot give you the flu. The vaccination is strongly recommended yearly for:

  • Persons aged 65 and over,
  • Those with a long-term medical condition such as diabetes, heart, kidney, liver, lung or neurological disease,
  • People whose immune system is impaired due to disease or treatment,
  • Persons with a body mass index (BMI) over 40,
  • Pregnant women (can be given safely at any stage of pregnancy),
  • Healthcare workers,
  • Carers
  • Book an appointment

If you have not previously received it, the Pneumococcal vaccine is also recommended for those who are 65 or over, or have a long term medical condition and protects against pneumonia. If you have a ‘Medical Card’ or ‘GP Visit Card’ both vaccines are free, otherwise each vaccine is €30.00.

If you have any queries or wish to call to make an appointment, please call the practice on 01-4942286. If you require a routine consultation in addition to your vaccination, please let us know at the time of booking.
